10 Free Creative Writing Resources for Primary Students

Creative writing has long been recognised as a powerful way to develop literacy skills, critical thinking, and imagination in primary students. Yet one of the ongoing challenges for teachers is finding materials that are both engaging and structured enough to support learning outcomes.
To help address this, Writesy has curated a set of free resources for Years 1–8 that can be easily adapted for the classroom. Each resource begins with a short story starter designed to capture students’ attention. Alongside this, teachers will find scaffolds such as vocabulary lists, sentence starters, dialogue prompts, and reflective questions. These elements encourage students to expand their ideas, experiment with language, and develop confidence as writers.
The resources are intentionally flexible. They can be projected on a classroom screen to spark group discussion, or printed and used for individual writing practice. Many also include collaborative writing ideas, giving students the opportunity to co-create stories—a practice that not only supports creativity but also builds communication and teamwork skills.
Topics are deliberately varied, ranging from light-hearted adventures to mysteries and imaginative scenarios. This breadth ensures that students with different interests and abilities can find an entry point into writing. Importantly, the materials are designed to save teachers planning time while still aligning with best practice in literacy instruction.
The ten resources linked below provide a practical starting point for any teacher wanting to inspire creativity in their classroom without adding to their workload.
