The Best Free Grammar Activities for Primary Students

Teaching grammar doesn’t have to feel like a worksheet exercise. In fact, when grammar is explored through games and hands-on activities, students are far more likely to transfer those skills into their writing. Here are eight free grammar activities perfect for Years 1–6, all of which can be easily woven into writing lessons.

1. Grammar Bingo

Students mark off verbs, adjectives, or punctuation marks as you call them out. Afterwards, ask them to use the words in a short piece of writing.

2. Sentence Scramble

Write sentences on strips of paper and cut them into words. Students race to rebuild the sentence correctly, then write their own version.

3. Punctuation Hunt

Give students a short text and challenge them to find and explain punctuation. Extend by asking them to apply the same punctuation in their own writing draft.

4. Roll a Sentence

Use dice to select a subject, verb, and object from a word bank. Students build silly sentences, then adapt them into a more meaningful paragraph.
