As Amir stepped into the dusty second-hand store, the musty smell of forgotten treasures filled his nose. He had come looking for an old book, but instead, his gaze was drawn to a guitar standing proudly amidst the clutter. Its surface gleamed with intricate carvings that seemed to whisper secrets of ancient melodies. With a heart full of curiosity and a hint of excitement fluttering in his chest, Amir reached out to touch the instrument, unaware that this simple act would unlock a world of magic and adventure he had only dreamed about.

The complication

  • The guitar is cursed and, when Amir plays it, shadowy figures from its carved scenes slip into the store and start rearranging objects into a trap.
  • A rival collector recognises the guitar and claims it is stolen property, forcing Amir to hide it and decide whether to keep it or return it.
  • The guitar opens a doorway to another time that pulls Amir partway through, and he must solve a riddle to come back before the door closes.

Sentence starters

  1. Suddenly, Amir plucked a string and the carved vines along the guitar seemed to ripple with light.
  2. The air smelled like varnish and rain, and the shop felt as if it were holding its breath around Amir.
