I could feel my heart beating faster as I skated across the ice, the cold wind rushing past my face. The crowd in the stands was so loud, but I didn’t mind. I was playing in my very first big hockey game, and everything was happening so fast! The puck was right in front of me, and I was ready to make my move. It felt like the whole game was in my hands, and I was determined to do my best. I was going to score, no matter what it took!

The complication

  • I miss the puck at the crucial moment and my team loses possession, leaving me to decide whether to chase the puck alone or pass to a better-placed teammate.
  • An opponent checks me hard near the boards and I must choose between getting back up quickly to continue or taking a moment to recover while the referee watches.
  • The score is tied in the final minute and the coach calls a risky play that I do not trust, forcing me to decide whether to follow orders or act on my own instinct.

Sentence starters

  1. Suddenly the defender lunged and I pushed harder with my skate to keep control of the puck. (uses a connective "Suddenly")
  2. My breath steamed in the cold air as the lights above the rink made the ice shine like a mirror. (sensory/atmosphere opener)
