The Floating City
Mystery and Adventure
The Floating City is a free, NAPLAN-aligned mystery and adventure writing resource for Australian primary students. It includes a story starter, complication, tiered vocabulary and scaffolds mapped to the Australian Curriculum (AC9).
I’ve heard the legends about the floating city before, but I never thought I’d see it for myself. My heart raced as I gazed up at the grand towers rising high above the clouds. Strange, glowing portals shimmered in the air, each one beckoning travellers to unknown lands. This was no ordinary city – it was something out of a dream. The air smelled of adventure and mystery, and I could feel the excitement tingling in my fingertips.
The complication
- As you step through one of the glowing portals, you find yourself in a land where everything is upside down. The sky is beneath you, and the ground seems to float above your head. How will you find your way back to the floating city?
- The city’s power seems to be failing. Lights flicker, and the air grows colder. You must find the ancient machine hidden beneath the city to restore its energy before it crashes to the ground.
- The floating city’s inhabitants are not all friendly. You’ve been noticed by the mysterious Sky Guardians, who protect the secrets of the portals. Will you be able to avoid capture and uncover the truth about the city’s origins?
