The Music of Colours
Fantasy
The Music of Colours is a free, NAPLAN-aligned fantasy writing resource for Australian primary students. It includes a story starter, complication, tiered vocabulary and scaffolds mapped to the Australian Curriculum (AC9).
Liam had always enjoyed evening walks with his family, but tonight was different. As he stood in the park, something strange happened. He noticed colourful wisps swirling around the air, glowing and shimmering in shades of blue, green, red, and yellow. As the lights danced around, Liam realised they weren’t just glowing—they were the sounds of the park! The gentle hum of the breeze was blue, the soft rustling of the leaves was green, and the distant bark of a dog was red. Each colour had its own sound, and Liam had never seen anything like it before.
The complication
- Liam is the only one who can see the sounds, and the more he watches, the more the colours begin to change and shift in unexpected ways.
- When Liam tries to touch the colourful sounds, they react like living things, zipping away or swirling in new directions.
- The sounds start to blend together, creating new colours that Liam can't explain, and he realises that the music might be trying to tell him something important.
