It had been raining for days, and honestly, we should never have come to school. We were told it was safe, that the weather would clear up, but it only got worse, way worse. By the time the bell rang, the skies were practically falling apart, and the water started creeping in through the windows. At first, we thought it was just a small leak, but then the floor started to turn into a lake. My feet were soaked in seconds, and as the water rose, I could feel the panic setting in. None of us were prepared for what happened next.

The complication

  • The water rises fast and the classroom door jams, trapping I and some classmates inside while the rest are outside on a flooded corridor.
  • A power cut plunges the school into darkness, and I must find a way to lead my friends to safety while the sprinklers and alarms make everything confusing.
  • A sudden structural crack appears in the wall near the windows, forcing I to decide whether to try to climb through the window to reach the roof or stay and wait for help that might not come soon.

Sentence starters

  1. Suddenly, I realised the water was higher than the tops of the desks and my heart beat like a drum.
  2. I pushed a chair against the window and felt the cold rain spray my face as the wind howled outside.
