The Guardian of the Library

Fantasy and Mythology

The Guardian of the Library is a free, NAPLAN-aligned fantasy and mythology writing resource for Australian primary students. It includes a story starter, complication, tiered vocabulary and scaffolds mapped to the Australian Curriculum (AC9).

As the golden candlelight flickered across the towering shelves, I could feel the weight of centuries pressing in. The library was silent, yet alive with an ancient magic. In the centre of the room, resting on a pedestal, lay the oldest book in existence. Its leather-bound cover shimmered with golden symbols, and surrounding it, hovering protectively, was a magnificent creature—a lion with wings of light. Its eyes glowed with a fierce, unwavering focus. The guardian of the book. I couldn’t help but approach it slowly, as if it would speak to me, but was I worthy.

The complication

  1. The magical creature warns the reader that only those worthy can approach the book. What does the creature say or do to test the intruder?
  2. As the reader tries to unlock the secrets of the book, an ancient curse is triggered, threatening to awaken a hidden danger. How do they handle the consequences?
  3. The creature becomes restless, sensing an evil force creeping into the library. The reader must decide whether to help the guardian protect the book or abandon their search for knowledge.
