The Stolen Star

Fantasy and Mythology

The Stolen Star is a free, NAPLAN-aligned fantasy and mythology writing resource for Australian primary students. It includes a story starter, complication, tiered vocabulary and scaffolds mapped to the Australian Curriculum (AC9).

Under the dark velvet sky, the stars shone brightly, but one star was missing. We all stood in a circle on the grassy hill, our cloaks swaying gently in the breeze. In the centre, a glowing star rested in on the ground, its light pulsing with the rhythm of their hearts. This was no ordinary star. It had been stolen from the night sky, and only we could return it. The swirling galaxies above seemed to watch us as a comet streaked across the sky, a reminder that time was running out. We knew we had to act quickly, or the star might be lost forever.

The complication

  1. The star grows dimmer with each passing minute, and the children must find a way to rekindle its light before it fades completely.
  2. As they prepare to return the star to the sky, an ancient creature emerges from the forest, demanding the star for itself. How will the children protect it?
  3. The children discover that the only way to return the star is to cross a magical bridge that only appears during certain moments in the sky’s cycle. They must time their journey perfectly.
