The Magic Book is a free, NAPLAN-aligned fantasy writing resource for Australian primary students. It includes a story starter, complication, tiered vocabulary and scaffolds mapped to the Australian Curriculum (AC9).
Sophie had always loved books, but this one was different. It was an old book she found hidden in a second hand book shop, its cover worn and edges frayed. That night, as she opened its pages, she noticed something strange—small sparks of light began to flicker and dance from the words. The more she read, the brighter the lights became, until the words on the pages started to move. Sophie’s heart raced. Was this magic?
The complication
- Sophie reads aloud, and suddenly a character from the book steps out into the room!
- The words begin to tell Sophie’s own story, and she is pulled into the book's world.
- The book begins to glow more brightly, and it’s impossible for Sophie to stop reading. What will happen when she finishes?
