The Spy Goldfish

Imagination

The Spy Goldfish is a free, NAPLAN-aligned imagination writing resource for Australian primary students. It includes a story starter, complication, tiered vocabulary and scaffolds mapped to the Australian Curriculum (AC9).

Max had always thought his goldfish, Bubbles, was a little strange. But today, when he knelt down to feed him, something happened that made his jaw drop. Bubbles wasn’t just swimming around the tank like usual—he was wearing tiny spy goggles and blowing bubbles that formed secret messages! Max couldn’t believe his eyes. What kind of fish could do something like this?

The complication

  1. Max tries to keep Bubbles’ secret, but the fish keeps sending more messages, and soon the whole family wants to know what’s going on.
  2. Max discovers that Bubbles is part of a secret fish spy organisation and needs Max’s help to stop a fishy plot!
  3. The fish’s messages start to get strange and cryptic—are they really from Bubbles, or is something else going on in the tank?
