The Secret Door
Mystery and Adventure
The Secret Door is a free, NAPLAN-aligned mystery and adventure writing resource for Australian primary students. It includes a story starter, complication, tiered vocabulary and scaffolds mapped to the Australian Curriculum (AC9).
It was midnight, and I was still in the library. I had promised myself I would study for the big history exam the next day, but the hours slipped away as I got lost in books about ancient kingdoms and forgotten treasures. The clock struck twelve, echoing through the silent halls, when I noticed something strange. At the back of the library, hidden behind rows of dusty old books, stood a door I had never seen before. Its carvings were intricate and mysterious, and it glowed softly in the dim light, as if calling me. My heart raced as I walked toward it—this was no ordinary door.
The complication
- The door will only open for someone who answers a riddle whispered in the silence of the library. If the wrong answer is given, the door will vanish.
- When the door opens, the library transforms into an unfamiliar, magical place, and the protagonist must find their way out before dawn.
- The protagonist enters the door but discovers that they are not alone—an ancient guardian creature waits within, and only by befriending it can they escape.
